Student Voice is a podcast/ online show on The BAM Radio Network that highlights the point of view of a student. In this podcast, I talked about some of the interesting things the students here at ladue get to do. This was a completely different opportunity than anything i've done before because it required my co-host and I to fill time by just talking. The video aspect came after. It was a good chance to practice my non scripted dialogue as well as on air skills.

As a part of HEC-TV's show EXPLORE! Sound and Sight, I took a look into what it is like to be blind. I worked with Annie Donnell and those close to her to get a glimpse of just how much the language of braille is crucial in developing independence and communication through the visually impaired. Annie was extremely open and was more than happy to share her life story. What I enjoy about this video is the connection it makes between displaying information and sharing a real story from a unique character. The EXPLORE! show went off without a hitch and I look forward towards the next opportunity to work with them! For the last day this semester of broadcasting, the ladue view crew decided to venture into unknown waters. Live taping the monthly ladue view show! We had the entire class participating and fully attentive. I was directing, meaning that I told people what to do when. It was a job that needed precision and a good understanding of commands and leadership. The crew was great! Reis was on tech directing and he was flawless with directions as well as Erin working the AJA on time. The main thing that brought this production to the next level is our anchors, Jane and Nadia. They were well prepared and rehearsed. They took control and were mistake FREE!! At the end of the day, we shot twice, despite 2 black frames, perfectly! I am very proud to be in a program that has the technology for a more professional setting. It was the perfect way to end the year! Earlier in november, 5 broadcasters including myself went to Boston for the JEA conference! On our first day there, we took an advanced broadcast bootcamp. During this bootcamp we had about 4 and a half hours to go, find a story, shoot it, edit it, then present it. My partner Reis and I drew a word out of a cup for reference, we got learning. Ok, easy enough, we are in a conference and learning is happening all around us. But there wasn't a story. There wasn't anything interesting and fresh. I refused to shoot one more shot of someone writing on a piece of paper! So we took a walk. In the middle of Boston! and not long we came across this food truck! My philosophy is 1) find a story 2) find a lively character 3) spin it the way you need it. We one, found this cute food truck with an interesting back story, two, definitely found a character, RUSSEL, and finally, we were able to turn it into the angle of learning. The people were so nice and inviting. They let me try some of the food and let us in the truck! They even waited till I came back that night to give me a monopod I left there! It was so fun and I hope to have another experience like it again! YAY! Another video is done! I enjoy this upbeat piece on fashion. This was my first time working with a fashion "tips" video, so when I meet up with Olivia, she really put my mind at ease. She had SO much to talk about, from colors to textures, to accessories. Olivia is an active designer and has produced her own fashion show. She is the president of Ladue High School's fashion club. She makes and sells her own clothing brand. This video is a small feature meant for a seasonal feel. Much of the video was taken in Chicago where they are for sure feeling the temperature decrease. My top likes of the video was the risk with a new form of entertainment, storytelling, and I had a lively character to bring a dynamic attitude. Some things to fix: shaky shots were the main issue I had while editing. I also need to keep a look out for my lighting and how I use it better. All in all, I had a great time making it and i hope the watcher has a great time watching it!
It feels great to be back in the swing of things as a junior. As my first project this year I was given the opportunity to work with HEC-TV again for their new show Explore! This show explores what your food goes through to get to your table, all the way from the farm to the market. And it also highlights healthy eating habits. As a part of this show I made 3 short factoids that focused on calories, food, and exercise. The factoids were easy and simple to make and my main goal was to make them conversational and easy to watch as a grade schooler (our audience). I like that HEC-TV is incorporating healthy eating habits into this show because during that stage in life, that is when the main habits are formed.
The fourth video I made this month was a package on an urban chicken farmer. I went with the (wonderful) HEC-TV crew to EarthDance farms and shot my intro and some b-roll. Then, the next day met up with them again at the Tower Grove Farmers Market. I think the video came out really well! I like the differences of shots and my storytelling. However, there were some issues that I NEED to improve on for next month: 1) i would like to be able to go handheld without it being too shaky 2) I feel like I can get more conversational (and not as stiff) with my intro 3) being ahead of it, there were minute details (like exporting correctly) that slipped, and If I want to be professional, those small details, like taking pictures and uploading on time will make or break a career. Overall, I am very proud of what I produced and accomplished in less than a month. If I can be more prepared I know that It can only make me better :) .
Uh. Finals are here once again! It's that magical time of year where many GPAs crash and students turn into zombies. As a sophomore, I have found that the amount of stress during this time seems to rise as you get closer and closer to graduation (seems so far away). This year especially has been difficult to keep head high when my face is buried underneath a few dozen textbooks. So, this month, I decided to use what little knowledge I've seemed to gather and attempt to help those who feel like I do every year around April through May. My main goal for the video was to help people, and even try to throw in some comedy here and there. Things that I feel went well with this video is the information, its a good how-to. Also, I like the brevity and laid back nature of it, I'm pretty sure High school students don't want to be lectured. Some things that I know should have been better was creating more variety in my shot choices. I had many medium shots, which made it look a bit more amateur. However, I'm still happy with the turn out of this lighthearted piece.
This semester, I was, once again, given the great opportunity to do some work outside of the classroom. As a part of our broadcast program at ladue, we have a show called Ladue Schools Today. This show is partnered with the Higher Education Channel here in St. Louis. This is a wonderful way for students to be involved in something bigger than the school. Hectv contacted us for a unique experiance; they wanted the students in our broadcast program to help host a show they broadcast live over the internet called HECTV Live. The topic of this show was weather forecasting. When I was given the opportunity to go down to the Fox 2 station and interview Chris Higgins on this topic, i was totally up for it! The studio tour was great and it was a great way for me to work on my on air skills. Things that I feel were improved from this experience was my on air presence, I (eventually) looked comfortable in front of the camera! With not much "telling what to do" by my teacher, I was able to further develop thinking and storytelling skills in front of and behind the camera. Seeing the show air was really cool for me because it gave a glimpse of how far I have come in one year and I can only imagine what I will be doing two years from now as a graduated senior! I can't wait to work HECTV and Fox2 again!
I can't wait to play, inform, perform.
Those six simple words seem to sum up quite a bit of who I am. The words I can't wait shows the anticipation of whats to come, Im always looking at whats next and how can I get to those really high goals of informing the world, playing my music, and performing for the fun of it! Those are just three of the things in life that I really can't see myself not doing. I made this video as a final for my broadcast class, however, it didn't feel like a final. This assignment was extremely unique! it was to create a six word story and attach those six words to six creative, distinct, and relevant shots. I found this challenge really interesting! In this short video I wanted to play with creative angles and different video techniques like transitions and coming in and out of focus. Im very proud of this video and I think it tells a story and who I am with unique shots and a fitting music choice! One thing that I feel I learned from this experience was to never "settle" in a video if it can be better (and everything can get better). My teacher helped me get the last two shots and It's ten billion times better than three days ago when I thought it was done! This year has been an amazing year for broadcast!! we have had some amazing experiences and some really talented seniors that I look up to fully! It seems to be getting better from here and I absolutely can't wait for my Junior year!! All year I've wanted to learn how to make a commentary, so it was not surprising that I jumped at the opportunity for an online broadcast. For the month of march, ladue got the opportunity to connect with a school in California to make an online newscast. Our theme was academic honesty and morality. I enjoyed the experiance a lot In that I was able to see different styles of broadcasting and what a similar program to ours looks and feels like. This commentary I feel hits close with teenagers; this was my target audience. Editing the commentary was fairly simple and painless. Some feedback from previous commentaries included maybe adding a pop of color in the background instea of the predictable white. I like the color chosen and felt that it did well in setting the tone of the peice. One thing I could have changed I feel we're some of the cuts I made. Some were too short and took away from what I was saying. Besides that, I enjoyed learning something new.
